Why Weather?

Why Weather?

Why weather? Do you ever think about why you are interested in weather – not just what you want to “do” with it? Like most, if not all, in this community, weather has been a life-long fascination for me.

Weather is an interesting topic that everyone seems to be interested in. Some look to see what they should wear, some watch the nightly news to see what tomorrow or the next week will bring, some are fascinated in the variety or the severity of it, some are fixated on the science behind it, and some the desire to predict the future. I fall in several of these camps, some more than others (I do love me some severe weather).

My love for nature is probably the primary force behind my interest in weather. I live in one of the most beautiful places on earth, surrounded by mountains, rivers, and oceans. I can sit for hours watching a stream, river, or the ocean, fascinated by the variety, regularity, and predictability of it all.

Same for weather: it is never the same, while at the same time it is, and when the contributing factors are known you can predict how it will behave. Fill the atmosphere with mostly water and it is no surprise that the same elements of interest would come into play. But, unlike water on the ground, it is virtually impossible to control consequential contributing factors in weather.

That’s why weather.

Fascinating beauty and uncontrollability – all you can do is “enjoy” it.

Weather is pure pleasure.

  1. There are so many reasons I love the weather, but they all stem from my fascination with the natural world. I’ve always been so interested in not only weather but astronomy, oceanography, geology… pretty much every Earth science in the book.

My weather hobby has led me to study the physics of the atmosphere, and this knowledge has further increased my love of weather. But at my core, I just love the weather because I love the power of nature.

I’ve noticed that a lot of huge weather geeks love the great outdoors too. I know I fall into that category… how about you?
